Job Announcement – Supported Employment Specialist (Full-time)

Chrysalis promotes mental health and substance use recovery in our community by supporting work opportunities
that encourage hope, healing and wellness. We serve consumers of Dane County living in Madison, WI and
surrounding area communities.

Job Summary:

The Supported Employment Specialist is responsible for providing community-based,
recovery-focused, vocational and educational support services to young adults and adults with serious mental
health challenges. These services include vocational and educational counseling and support, assessment, skills
training, and problem solving. Supported Employment Specialists develop relationships with local businesses and
communicate regarding consumer’s performance and goals. Our Supported Employment Specialists work with
other treatment providers to coordinate services and develop person-centered treatment plans. They are
responsible for keeping all documentation accurate and up to date, including: progress notes, vocational
assessments, hour logs, and releases of information. Chrysalis utilizes the evidence based practice, Individual

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s or Master Degree in Social Work, Rehabilitation Psychology, Psychology, Youth Services &
    Education, Behavioral Health, Human Services, or related field preferred
  2. Strong commitment to principles of recovery and person-centered services. Experience working with
    individuals who have serious mental health challenges.
  3. Experience working in vocational or employment development and placement.
  4. Lived experience with mental health or substance use challenges.
  5. Ability to evaluate and problem solve about mental health and job-related concerns.
  6. Sensitivity to the needs of underserved adults with multiple barriers to employment.
  7. Knowledge of mental health and vocational rehabilitation systems in Dane County.
  8. Ability to create and maintain professional boundaries.
  9. Highly creative, organized, efficient, flexible and takes initiative; must be able to work independently.
  10. Dedicated to building strong relationships through regular & consistent communications and services
  11. Enjoys meeting and making new connections with others through regular networking in the community.
  12. Valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle to use for work, and current automobile insurance.

Work Environment:

Shared office setting that promotes communication with co-workers. Staff provide the majority
(65%) of services in the community, not limited to homes, treatment centers and participant’s place of
employment. Staff travel throughout Dane County and transport participants when appropriate. The regular work
week is Monday through Friday with scheduling flexibility to meet staff and program needs. Staff create their own
schedule with participants. Each day will look different based on specific job responsibilities and participant’s

Employee Status: Full-time, Salaried

Salary Range: $40,000 – $50,000

Job Summary: The Vocational Peer Specialist is responsible for providing direct support services to participants within the community.  The Vocational Peer Specialist provides individual coaching and encouragement for consumers who are working on their vocational goals. Peer Specialists function as role models demonstrating techniques in recovery and in ongoing coping skills through:

  • Lending their unique insight into mental health and/or substance use and what makes recovery possible
  • Supporting with teaching and educating the consumer on problem solving techniques when symptoms increase around employment
  • Teaching participants how to identify and work through negative self-talk 
  • Assisting with building social skills in the community and teaching self-advocacy skills to support success within the workplace and in the community 
  • Assisting participants in obtaining services that suit that individual’s recovery needs
  • Attending Recovery Team meetings to promote participant’s use of self-directed recovery tools
  • Assisting participants in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy and stigma-busting activities
  • Assist with completing job applications and submitting resumes. 

The Vocational Peer Specialist is responsible for keeping all documentation accurate and within established timeframes, this including: Progress notes, hour logs, monthly reports and releases of information. 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Currently a Certified Peer Specialist
  • Strong commitment to principles of recovery and person-centered services
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws governing the handling of confidential information
  • Highly computer literate (i.e. in Google or Microsoft Word, Excel, & PowerPoint)
  • Ability to evaluate, and problem solve about mental health and job related concerns
  • Creativity, organization, efficiency, flexibility and ability to take initiative, must be able to work independently. 
  • Ability to create and maintain professional boundaries
  • Valid driver’s license, access to a car to use for work, and automobile insurance.

*If not already certified as a Peer Support Specialist, applicant must have completed the Certified Peer Specialist training and be ready to sit for the exam and pass within the first 3 months of employment
