Announcement – Vocational Peer Specialist

Chrysalis, Inc. is a non-profit agency that promotes mental health recovery by supporting work opportunities that encourage hope, healing and wellness. Chrysalis is currently hiring for a full-time Vocational Peer Specialist.

Job Summary: The Vocational Peer Specialist is responsible for providing direct support services to consumers in the Peer-Run Recovery Groups and within the community as a Peer Specialist.  The Vocational Peer Specialist helps to facilitate a positive and appropriate group environment and provides individual coaching and encouragement for consumers who are working on their vocational goals. The Peer Specialist performs a wide range of tasks to assist consumers in regaining control over their own lives and other their own recovery process. Peer Specialists function as role models demonstrating techniques in recovery and in ongoing coping skills through:

  • Facilitating on-site peer-run recovery groups
  • Assisting with teaching and educating the consumer on problem solving techniques when symptoms increase around employment
  • Teaching consumers how to identify and work through negative self-talk
  • Assisting with building social skills in the community and teaching self-advocacy skills to support success within the workplace and in the community
  • Assisting consumers in obtaining services that suit that individual’s recovery needs
  • Lending their unique insight into mental illness and what makes recovery possible
  • Attending treatment team and crisis plan development meetings to promote consumer’s use of self-directed recovery tools
  • Informing consumers about community and natural supports and how to utilize these in the recovery process
  • Assisting consumers in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy and stigma-busting activities

Essential Qualifications:

  1. Certified Peer Specialist
  2. Two years of experience in community mental health treatment methods
  3. Knowledge of Mental Health diagnosis, symptoms, and treatments
  4. Knowledge of federal and state laws governing the handling of confidential information
  5. Ability to evaluate, make recommendations and problem solve about mental health concerns
  6. Ability to work independently and interact effectively with consumers, employers, staff, and community members
  7. Excellent verbal & written communication skills, highly organized
  8. Strong commitment to principles of recovery and consumers’ participation in their own service planning
  9. Ability to create and maintain professional boundaries
  10. Highly computer literate (i.e. in Microsoft Word, Excel, & PowerPoint)
  11. Access to car and auto insurance and willingness to use your vehicle for work

Work Conditions: Open office environment. Provide services in the community not limited to homes, treatment centers and consumers place of employment. Travel throughout Dane County and transport consumers when clinically appropriate.  Work Monday through Friday with some scheduling flexibility to meet staff and program needs.

Population Served: Chrysalis consumers have a wide array of different backgrounds and experiences. Staff is expected to be comfortable working with Individuals with all of the following;

  1. Mental Health and Addiction Diagnosis
  2. Current Substance Use
  3. Criminal Backgrounds
  4. Different Races and Ethnicities
  5. Varied Levels of Engagement in Services

Hours: 8:30-4:30, Monday – Friday

Salary Range:  $30,000 – $35,000
